There are always those few weeks when it is longer the cool, rainy autumn, and the true biting cold of winter has not yet arrived. As part of his popular interactive series that presents and showcases Hungary's folk traditions, Zoltán "Batyu” Farkas will speak to us about this ‘in-between' period as we explore some notable dates in the Hungarian calendar from late-November to mid-December. The words disappear but the feeling remains: we'll have traditional folk dance ensembles, a folk storyteller, and plenty of song and dance as customs related to the coming of winter take centre stage.

So much happens in Hungarian folk culture between Catherine's Day on 25 November and Lucia's Day on 13 December! As winter approaches, spinning wheels become the focal point of the village, where the women enjoy long conversations and - with a bit of luck - the girls find their future match among the young men who drop by. Speaking of marriage: Saint Catherine's Day is also linked to fortune-telling practices for matching husbands. After all, folk culture has never shied away from the world of mysticism and superstition. Saint Lucia's Day takes place on the shortest day of the year, which, of course, is also the year's longest night, when people had to employ various tricks as a defence against the hexes of witches. They would also begin making Lucia's chair, which at Christmas time would be stood on and used to identify the evil witches. The driving force behind the show - which presents autumn and winter folk traditions in a playful and interactive format - will be director and host Zoltán "Batyu” Farkas, who brings exactly the same kind of tireless energy and good humour to the stage as the folk singer and storyteller Krisztina Benedek.
