This concert by the Burgundy Dragon Early Music Order will bring the secular music of the Middle Ages to life without it ever feeling mothballed or academic. By their own definition, the band plays “medieval world music”: Hungarian and European melodies and dances performed on period instruments with contemporary energy, powerful rhythms and irresistible dynamism. The Middle Ages do not appear as a distant artefact you might find in a museum, but as a vibrant, living communal experience. From the sounds of bagpipes, flutes, strings, plucked instruments and percussion emerges a raw, colourful and vivid world. The programme provides a glimpse into an era that rarely receives much attention in music education, despite its influence being clearly traceable in the music of later centuries. This rousing concert is sure to get people on their feet as it suddenly brings history thrillingly close.
