Aus Italien, Op. 16
This concert by the MÁV Symphony Orchestra offer a voyage across Italy, first by evoking the celebrated 19th-century double bass virtuoso Giovanni Bottesini with an instrumental excerpt from a Romantic opera of his. This piece will be followed by Paganini’s violin concerto in B minor, which confides earnest and profound emotions. The piece’s slow movement is a heartfelt prayer bookended by two movements filled with instrumental flourishes, the latter of which is “La campanella” (“The Little Bell”), an arrangement of a popular Neopolitan song. We will conclude with Richard Strauss’s atmospherically rich symphonic poem Aus Italien, which nostalgically recalls visits to Sorrento, Rome and Naples almost like a postcard. Serving as the soloist for the evening is the world-famous violin virtuoso Kristóf Baráti. The name Michelangelo Mazza might also be familiar: he is considered a specialist when it comes to conducting Italian opera.
