Loss, hope and reconciliation trace the arc of the Szent István Philharmonic’s Rachmaninov concert. Inspired by Böcklin’s mystical painting, The Isle of the Dead evokes the mysterious world of death, while the Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, written after a long creative crisis, is one of the most popular masterpieces of late-Romantic music and guides the listener from darkness towards hope. The rarely heard choral symphony The Bells, based on a poem by Edgar Allan Poe, journeys through the great turning points of human life – from birth to death. The music of overwhelming power gives voice to both the idea of passing and that of release.
