Viola Sonata, Op. 147

Violist jokes are now a thing of the past! The versatile French/Dutch musician Sào Soulez Larivière is a living example of this new reality: a passionate chamber musician, he presents new works, transcribes other ones and teaches at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Counting Tabea Zimmermann among his mentors, the multiple competition-winning violist will be taking the stage in the Rising Stars series alongside Julia Hamos, a New York-born Hungarian-American pianist who herself has studied under such masters as András Schiff. New York is also the home of the composer Julia Wolfe, who, although she typically writes music for larger forces of instruments, was happy to accept the commission from the young violist and ECHO so that he could play – together with two Russian masterpieces of the 20th century – a new piece of hers, and as a world premiere here in Budapest no less.

Nominated for the Rising Stars programme by: Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Müpa Budapest, Barbican Centre London
