Mozart spent four months toiling feverishly on this opera, striving to work the plot into something as natural-seeming as possible and focusing on depicting the characters’ emotions and thought processes in the music too as vividly as he could. Despite the composer’s youth at the time, Idomeneo can be classified among those of his works that constitute encapsulations of the entire body of music he wrote for the stage. Its virtuoso orchestral parts, massive choral scenes, and dramatic, extraordinarily colourful and expressive harmonic world all combine to make it a masterpiece.
