Four Faces, Four Wings (commissioned by ECHO) – Hungarian premiere
Whatever the young Portuguese musicians of the Maat Saxophone Quartet, founded in Amsterdam, play – from fado to new music – there is no mistaking the individuality of their performances. Having triumphed at the top musical competitions in Portugal and Holland, among other places, the band has released two albums, the first of which critics referred to as: “promising, devilishly good, and heavenly contagious.” While their multidisciplinary project from last year reflected on climate change, this year they return in the spirit of Kafka with a virtual opera entitled Metamorphosis. Their exciting concert presents composers from the middle ages to the present day with a Hungarian premiere from the multifariously creative Serbian-American Aleksandra Vrebalov the crowning glory, but we could not do without Gershwin and The Beatles in our search for true diversity.
