Carmina Burana

Each year, hundreds of choral singers gather from all over Hungary and beyond to perform the most significant works of the musical literature. This follows several months of preparation and an intensive weekend under the leadership of Gábor Hollerung. This jubilee year marks the 40th anniversary of the event and will see the now customary performance of Orff’s Carmina Burana alongside Emil Petrovics’s comic opera Lysistrata. The 50-minute single-act work is set during the Peloponnesian War: The women vow to deny their husbands their conjugal rights until they put a stop to the war. This causes anguish to all concerned, so peace is agreed and the harmony of the marital couples is likewise restored. Lysistrata triumphs on the ‘battleground’ and the opera concludes with a paean to love.
