Judit Varga is an highly respected representative of her generation of composers, and teaches at both the Vienna and Budapest music academies. Her work includes countless award-winning film scores and stand-alone compositions. It was perhaps for this reason that she was commissioned by the Vienna Konzerthaus last year to compose a 70-minute standalone piece of music for the Austrian Ensemble Phace to the Soviet silent film made in 1923. Based on the tagline to the score, the piece is defined as "entertaining classical music”.
With this production, Müpa Budapest joins the Átlátszo Hang (Transparent Sound) New Music Festival, which takes place from 6 and 15 January in several venues and is curated by Balázs Horváth and Samu Gryllus. In connection with the evening and true to the traditions of the festval, we will be making certain sections and compositional techniques of the work more "transparent” in the form of an interactive analysis session with the audience. Prior to the performance from 7 pm, we will be discussing the film and the music written for it with the composer.

A screening of the digital version of the 35mm film print from the collection of the Austrian Film Museum.

The production's cooperating partner is the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Bundeskanzleramt Österreich.
