Conductor: András Deák Featuring György Geiger – trumpet Barber: The School for Scandal – overture, op. 5 Ervin Jereb: Trumpet Concerto Dukas: Sorcerer’s Apprentice – symphonic scherzo Shostakovich: Symphony no. 9 in E flat major, op. 70 Following the overture by one of the most important American composers of the 20th century, we shall hear the Trumpet Concerto by Ervin Jereb, played by one of Hungary’s premiere exponents of the instrument. The French composer Paul Dukas composed his witty symphonic scherzo based on Goethe’s ballad in 1897 and it became a huge classical hit. This quality entertaining concert concludes with one of Shostakovich’s shortest symphonies, which the composer described as a “happy little piece.”
