Bartlett Sher's lively production of this romantic comedy that never fails to entertain leaves plenty of scope for emotional expression. Portraying Adina in a long-awaited new role at the Metropolitan will be Pretty Yende. The South African soprano's career has skyrocketed since she won three major international competitions in three years, leading to a début at La Scala in 2012 and at the Met the following year. Singing Nemorino in 2013, Matthew Polenzani had the audience well and truly mesmerised with his amazing rendition of Una furtiva lagrima. The American lyric tenor can boast incredible numbers: over the past 20 years, he has taken the stage at the Lincoln Center in more than 300 performances of 20 different roles. It would hardly be possible to find a better singer to portray the comical role of the determined peasant lad who falls in love with an educated girl. Appearing as the quack doctor Dulcamara is yet another international star: Ildebrando D'Arcangelo. The superb Italian baritone Davide Luciano will be making his Met début as Sergeant Belcore, out to conquer Adina's heart with the speed of a hussar. Also making his first appearance at the Metropolitan Opera is Domingo Hindoyan, a product of Venezuela's El Sistema and a former assistant to Daniel Barenboim.
