Brahms
Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68
The BFO’s Brahms series continues its exploration of the contrasts between his search for profundity and his lighter popular hits by introducing the more solemn pieces on the programme with Hungarian Dances. On this occasion, it is the former taking the leading role, with the opening piece of the series of 21 dances being followed by the composer’s grandiose First Piano Concerto. Then after the 11th Hungarian Dance (which after ten energetic ones, opens a sequence of more lyrical movements), we will hear Brahms’s First Symphony, which required him to overcome the oppressive thought that he was “writing a symphony after Beethoven”. Serving as the soloist for the concerto will be the Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein, whom international critics have declared a true phenomenon of great depth.
