The Rite of Spring
Earth Legends – dance drama
Folklore is at the heart of this performance. Like Bartók, Stravinsky was one of the first composers to incorporate folklore into his work, and he did so with great ingenuity. He composed his ballet The Rite of Spring at the request of Sergei Diaghilev, director of the Ballet Russes company. His musical work – as the subtitle of the piece also indicates – recalls Russian pagan myths with its elemental, raw musical techniques and unusual rhythms. The second half our concert will present the dance drama Earth Legends, a joint production by the Fitos Dezső Dance Company and the BDO, the creators of which made use of folk music-inspired pieces by Bartók, Szentpáli and Weiner. These works are supplemented by original folk music material from Bence Pálházi’s Band.
