Born into a musical family and soon revealing herself to be a child prodigy, Varijashree Venugopal pioneered the way in integrating her own musical roots, India’s classical Carnatic tradition, into the medium of jazz. This singer-songwriter who uses her voice as an instrument combines Indian vocal techniques with other cultures and genres, part of a wider trend that has led to Indian musical influences playing an increasingly prominent role in contemporary jazz. Winning praise from the likes of Bobby McFerrin for her technique of crossing Carnatic sounds with scat singing, Vari has collaborated with Jacob Collier, Béla Fleck, Anoushka Shankar and Snarky Puppy – earning her a Grammy nomination among other accolades, and her albums are released on the same label as Söndörgö’s. The concert is featuring guest star Michael League, along with Vari’s highly sought-after bandmates, will surely turn Vari’s first Hungarian appearance into a unique event.
