Mihály Víg is a very important and influential figure in Hungarian popular music. Balaton, the group he formed 35 years ago, emerged as one of the key bands of the Hungarian new wave, but his songs, in contrast to those of the new wave generation, are characterised not by impetuosity but by a kind of angelic melancholy. Víg wrote classic songs right from the start. As well as Balaton - and the closely linked group Trabant - his music for the films of Béla Tarr also represents an important ...chapter in his career, as does the record on which he sings Gypsy songs that he himself collected in the footsteps of his father Rudolf Víg, a researcher of Roma folk music.
The production entitled Tonight You're the Boss draws from all three areas of Víg's work. The songs are arranged by Béla Ágoston, himself a key figure in popular music, whose work is known for breaking down generic boundaries, and whose trend-setting world music album of Kispál és a Borz covers was ahead of its time in 2000. Over his career, he has lined up with key groups such as Vízöntő, Kampec Dolores, Etnofon Zenei Társulás and the Odessa Klezmer Band, while leading the Agostones, the Ágoston Trio and Zuboly. He is also known well beyond the country's borders, having made a joint album international klezmer star Frank London.
Ágoston's sensitivity and the skill of his musical partners guarantee a production that strikes an idiosyncratic tone while remaining deeply attached to the Víg compositions and sure to appeal to followers of rock, jazz and world music alike. The glittering roll-call of guest singers provides a further guarantee, not to mention Mihály Víg himself, without whom it would be hard to imagine these songs. Luckily, we don't have to…
