Concerts by Kálmán Balogh and Miklós Lukács's Cimbalom Duo are a rare occurence. When they do take place, each show is different, meaning their every appearance is a truly unique experience. Not just unique, but also absolutely enthralling. They may not spread their wings often, but when they do they fly in 'the grip of each other', reaching incredible heights and soaring far beyond the limits of musical genres and their instruments. The freedom of their improvisation as they inspire each other with their playing is utterly unstoppable.

In 1987, Miklós Lukács won the children's section of the first ever Hungarian Cimbalom Competition. Kálmán Balogh won the adult category. After studying classical music, Lukács went on to explore jazz and contemporary music, while Balogh delved into the folklore of various peoples, showing us that there is no genre where the cimbalom does not have a vital role to play. Though the idea of them working together had been brought up more than once in the 1990s, their wish only came true when they were signed up by the FolkEurópa record label. That led to the 2009 album Négykezes cimbalomra (For the Four-handed Cimbalom), which they showcased at the opening concert of the 2011 World Music Expo in Copenhagen. They made a new album, Összehangolva (Harmonised), in 2015, before going on to captivate the WOMEX audience for a second time. Never before had this expert crowd of music aficionados heard anything like it. The two cimbalom players led the dance together, improvising as a duo or deftly providing an accompaniment to the other's lead. Their Müpa Budapest concert promises to be no less of a marvel. We can look forward to some brand new compositions alongside the most successful hits from the two Cimbalom Duo albums, interspersed with their astonishing and utterly magical free-form improvisations.
