'I am a storyteller, and I tell stories through song,' says Nikoletta Szőke, referring to the fact that theatrical elements often take on a predominant role in her concerts. This performer who has won both the Montreux Jazz Competition and the Junior Prima Award is one of the most popular jazz singers in Hungary, and in this major production she has conceived of for Müpa Budapest, she has selected theme songs from half a century of the most popular Hollywood films. Joining her and her own quartet will be the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok playing under the baton of Gábor Hollerung, along with star guest Bálint Gájer, the countries 'prince of swing'
Over the course of her unflaggingly successful career, Nikoletta Szőke has performed concerts in New York, Tokyo and numerous European countries, taking the stage with such stars as Bobby McFerrin and Michel Legrand. This time around, she will be performing legendary Hollywood film music from the 1920s to the 1970s, scored for a full symphony orchestra specifically for this occasion and with Gábor Hollerung conducting. On the programme will be such movie themes as Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany's and I will Wait for You from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, as well as the title songs from Cabaret, Singing in the Rain and The Way We Were. Although the concert promises to be a spectacular one, Szőke stresses that 'it is not the technical implementation or sense of fanfare that interests me in music, but rather the message and the richness of the means of expression.'
