Numerous symbols in Gypsy culture are linked to nomadic life and the travelling caravan. This was apparent at the Szekérnyom ("wagon-track”) festival held at the Palace of Arts in 2005, the atmosphere of which will be evoked here by a quartet of Roma bands. Kálmán Balogh and the Gipsy Cimbalom Band evoke the path of the wanderer with the colours of Gypsy music from the Balkans and the Mediterranean, while redefining the notion of Gypsy restaurant music. The music of Karaván Família overflows not only with melodies from Hungary, but also sounds from the Balkans, Romania, Spain and Russia. These two bands unite in the Gipsy Reunion project, in which Roma vocal and instrumental traditions are blended with passionate flamenco, Russian Gypsy songs, Balkan sources and manouche jazz. Romengo show a richness of emotion unparalleled in the genre. It is a rare treat to hear four bands of this kind together on one occasion, so anyone who misses the opportunity has only themselves to blame. So come and join the bandwagon!
