The explanation for the name of the Stúdió 11 ensemble is simple: it usually comprised 11 members, and the group was dedicated to making studio music. It goes without saying that they have not only survived over the past 60 years, but have also gone on to make their mark on the Hungarian popular music scene. There is certainly cause for celebration. With the help of four outstanding soloists, Réka Koós, Nikoletta Szőke, Viktor Király and Gábor Majsai, the ensemble, which currently has 12 members, will perform the unmissable songs that have become their trademark, together with a string of delightful surprises.
The Stúdió 11 group was formed in 1963 under the leadership of Imre Zsoldos and Sándor Dobsa under the aegis of Hungarian Radio. Over its 60 years of history, the group has played a definitive role in the development of Hungarian popular music. Its members have always been highly trained musicians, as well as the very finest soloists and prestigious performers from the Hungarian and international jazz scenes. The fruits of their several decades of artistic activity can be found and seen in an ocean's worth of TV and radio recordings. Pál Szécsi, Péter Máté, Zsuzsa Cserháti, Géza Hofi and Kati Kovács - these are just a few of the legends to have recorded with the group. Many followed their progress ‘live' on black-and-white televisions or on the radio through several seasons of the Táncdalfesztivál (Dance Song Festivals) TV shows, not to mention their performances of hits on Tessék választani! (Please Choose!) and then later on the Made in Hungary shows. Stúdió 11 also performed at the eMeRTon prize ceremony gala events. In fact, they have even flown a spaceship!
The Stúdió 11 Ensemble, which now operates as an artistic company, has played in the broadest range of line-ups, freely creating in all kinds of jazz and pop styles. In 2010, they paid tribute to Jaco Pastorius at Müpa Budapest in the company of Victor Bailey and Peter Erskine. On this evening, András Csonka will help look back through their enormous audio album of memories, which still has many pages left blank for the coming 60 years.
