Born in 1973, American-Canadian singer, lyricist and composer Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright makes music that defies easy classification. He has released seven albums of his own, has written film scores and classical operas, and put Shakespeare's sonnets to music for a play by Robert Wilson. With a folk-singer of a mother and a Grammy Award-winning lyricist of a father, he started to play the piano at the age of six, and has maintained an interest in opera since his childhood. As a young man, he performed at Montreal's Café Sarajevo, and from 1996 at the Club Fez, New York, before moving to Los Angeles, where his first record came out in 1998. A tenor singer, he also plays the guitar, and has proved in almost all genres and media (film, television, theatre) that he is worth keeping a track on.
