The Hungarian musicians of PapaJazz are without exception lovers and virtuoso players of American jazz, and within it New Orleans jazz and swing, while American jazz star Scott Robinson is a dedicated exponent of the Hungarian folk music of the tárogató. These two converging forces came together in the summer of 2015 in Budapest, when Robinson was visiting Hungary as an invited guest artist at the 5th Tárogató World Congress, and when the musicians of PapaJazz managed to entice him to collaborate on their new album then being recorded, My Blue Heaven. The Hungarian-American connection is further strengthened by the fact that the previous owner of Robinson's tárogató was none other than the late Joe Muranyi, the one-time Hungarian-American clarinettist with the Louis Armstrong All Stars.
Scott Robinson is one of the most versatile jazz musicians working today. He played tenor saxophone in Buck Clayton's band, trumpet in Lionel Hampton's quintet, alto clarinet in Paquito D'Rivera's clarinet quartet, and bass saxophone as a member of the New York City Opera. Although he counts the tenor saxophone as his main instrument, he plays on all manner of wind instruments (from contrabass saxophone to piccolo), as well as cornet, tuba, euphonium, theremin, sarrusophone, ophicleide and other rare instruments. His proficiency in various musical styles is matched by the richness of his knowledge of musical instruments. He has recorded with stars as diverse as Ella Fitzgerald, Sting, Maria Schneider, Elton John, Joe Lovano, Ron Carter and Bob Brookmeyer - and has played on two Grammy Award-winning albums.
