Orsi Kozma occupies a prominent place in the ever-growing ranks of Hungarian jazz chanteuses. The most significant stops in her career so far were the spells she spent with Jazz+Az and the Cotton Club Singers, but her solo career so far has served to accentuate both her instinctive talent and creative intelligence. As a little girl she sang in the Hungarian Radio Children’s Choir. Later she made her debut at the Operetta Theatre in Somewhere in Europe, following this up soon after with an appearance in The Jungle Book in Székesfehérvár. Musical theatre has remained a sideline of her career ever since, giving rein to both her singing and acting ambitions. In Eger she appeared with Piroska Molnár, Gyula Bodrogi and Géza D. Hegedűs in Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera, while also taking part in the TÁP Theatre’s production of Űrzrínyiász. Her big breakthrough and national recognition came with the group Jazz+Az, and then her membership of the Cotton Club Singers from 2000. Hide and Seek, the first record of her quartet founded in 2008, immediately garnered a Fonogram Award nomination and was issued in Japan in October 2010. In 2009 she won a special prize in the Jazzy Song Competition, and picked up another professional award at the Pécs Fringe Festival in 2010. According to the singer herself, the new album of the Orsi Kozma Quartet, entitled Embrace, “embraces and envelopes the listener, capturing heart and soul as it spins its yarns. It’s like a long and tender tale in which there is playing and excitement, sadness, mischief and wisdom – whatever fancy takes the listener. I feel that with this group I’ve really found my own voice and the range of sounds in which I’m able to express myself best.” Presented by the Palace of Arts
