All the organists who have performed at the Palace of Arts so far have come from the world of the church organ. Now for the first time, the Queen of Instruments in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall will be played by an artist who has performed on a Hammond organ serving up jazz, blues and light music. Born in Munich in 1964, Barbara Dennerlein committed herself to the electric organ in her teens and there is no disputing that this instrument is enjoying a renaissance in contemporary jazz bec...ause her being the ”first lady”. The first half of her concert is entitled Spiritual Movement and this massively praised jazz artist will be displaying her improvising skills. “I always wait until I get to know the sound of a given organ because it’s only when I know it that I can get going. I fuse a great many styles in my music, swing, latin, funk, blues, bepop, contemporary music; the most important thing is for there to be inspiration born from the individual sound of the organ and the acoustic of the hall. The objective is to touch the soul of the audience and perhaps improvisation is the most important device at my disposal”, she said in an interview. The second half is called Hammond B3 jam session and Barbara Dennerlein will be joined by some distinguished Hungarian jazz musicians while she will be playing a Hammond B3 organ. Unusually for a jazz organist, she also plays the bass and thanks to her amazing pedal technique, creates a rich sonic texture. “The pedals enable me to create a very special rhythmic structure which cannot be easily imitated by the double-bass, since together with the two manuals I have a kind of »rhythmic triptych« at my disposal”, she says.
