Operetta! Operetta?
20 April 2008 Sunday
6 pm - 8:30 pm
Béla Bartók National Concert Hall

This concert features classic hits of Hungarian operetta. But… Yes, there is a “but”! We must take the question and exclamation marks in the title seriously because both statement and question are true. This evening we will hear the international hits of a truly Hungarian genre but mostly presented to the audience in an unusual manner. Tangolita and Carambolina will be performed by a Latin American band, and a jazz group will play Oh, Mister Blue. Needless to say, the audience can expect many exciting musical surprises in addition to these. These famous melodies will be heard at the Palace of Arts for the first time. Perhaps fate has something to do with this: in 2006 we commemorated the 125th anniversary of the birth of Béla Bartók, but it was also the anniversary of Béla Zerkovitz. 2007 marked the 125th anniversary of Zoltán Kodály’s birth but also that of Emmerich Kálmán. All over the world, Hungarian (Viennese) operetta is just as well known as the music of Bartók and Kodály. It is not sacrilege for the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall to host the music of Kálmán, Zerkovitz, Franz Lehár and other operetta composers.
