When pioneering jazz guitar hero John Scofield released the album A Go Go in 1998 with Medeski, Martin & Wood, a trio largely responsible for the renaissance of the Hammond organ, they could have had no inkling of just how enthusiastically it would be received worldwide - and not only among jazz lovers. The group's entertaining and danceable, groove-centred bluesy jazz-funk also satisfies fans looking for clever improvisation and brilliant ensemble play.
Although the two musical universes of Scofield and Medeski, Martin & Wood have always remained close, their paths crossed again only in 2006 with the album Out Louder - which was released with all four musicians as equal partners - and then five years later with the live concert recording In Case the World Changes Its Mind. It was well worth the wait as both occasions produced outstanding music. "Sometimes we would play free stuff, listen back, make a song out of it, and then go back with that idea in mind and play free again,” recalls the 62-year-old Scofield of the collaboration. "I've never worked like that before. The music was all about surprise.”
By the time of this concert at the Palace of Arts, a brand-new MSMW record will have been released, a taster of which will be played here by the quartet, who can also be expected to dip into the back catalogue of both Scofield's own best known tunes and those of MSMW.
