Festival Theatre
Produced by Müpa Budapest

She has performed with Eric Clapton, toured with Jacob Collier and collaborated with Odesza, not to mention garnering millions of listeners on Spotify and achieving success in the Eurovision Song Contest. Now, after shifting into an intimate folk sound with her most recent album, the truly versatile Portuguese singer MARO is coming to Hungary for the first time, as part of a trio with two Catalan acoustic guitarists. Her songs develop organically: quietly restrained, they are immediately compelling, sung with a voice that goes straight into our ears.

Born in Lisbon, the multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/performer/producer MARO graduated from Boston’s renowned Berklee College of Music in 2017. Then, with a number of albums released in quick succession – five in 2018 alone – she drew the attention of Jacob Collier, appearing on his album Djesse Vol. 2 and subsequent tour. Like Collier, she found great success with her own YouTube series, playing alongside Eric Clapton in one episode, for example. This makes it no wonder that her other co-productions have also been so successful: in addition to working with the dance-pop groups Odesza and Nasaya, she has also ventured into indie-pop with the Paper Kites and – a recent visitor to Müpa Budapest – Sílvia Pérez Cruz. Departing from her earlier folky, somewhat neo-soul sound, she came out with a more electronic alt-pop album in 2022, taking ninth place with a song in this style at the Eurovision Song Contest that same year. Her 2023 album hortelã, however, returns to her low-key roots. It brings us wonderful Portuguese-language songs that immediately touch the soul, with glittering vocals made brilliant against the spare accompaniment of three acoustic guitars. We will definitely be hearing more about her, so make sure not to miss her first Budapest appearance!
