Dénes Makovics began his musical studies at the age of seven in 1969. He inherited his talent from his grandfather, who played frequently at weddings and village balls. Choosing the flute as his instrument, he continued his classical music studies at the Miskolc Conservatory from 1976. Makovics was greatly influenced by the period of the 1970s when rock musicians began playing jazz solos while jazz musicians experimented with electric instruments. Impressed by Michael Brecker, he switched to saxophone in 1982, and has worked with the rock group Bikini since 1986 while also playing in a number of Hungarian jazz bands. He has played with Aladár Pege, Vilmos Jávori, János Fogarasi, Kálmán Oláh and many other outstanding musicians, and has performed abroad on many occasions. He has also worked on shows for famous actors, including Géza Hofi and Andrea Malek, and has been a member of the Police Special Forces brass band since 1996.
Makovics is a multi-instrumentalist and versatile musician who also excels as a composer. The tunes on his first solo record are all his own compositions, transporting the listener to the most diverse musical realms in terms of both style and sound. The performance of these compositions requires a wide diversity of musicians, and the magical musical dialogues created on the record with the help of some thirty performers will accordingly be recreated here in the form of a large-scale showcase of Makovics’s work at the Müpa “Jazz Workshop.”
