These transformations do not transport us to the Greco-Roman world of legend, but to the universe of music, where the boundaries between styles drift away. Although the members of this foursome are most closely tied to jazz, they are all authentic purveyors of world music, too, most notably the rhythms and melodies of India, the Balkans, Africa and Latin cultures. The engine of the group is the Kossuth Award-winning percussionist Kornél Horváth, so it is fair to assume that rhythm will be ...the main protagonist here. The preferred formation for this rag-wristed master of the conga, bongos, udu, hang drum, gatodrum and many more instruments is the duo. He has already played in one such formation at the Palace of Arts at the Monday Evening Jazz series with the Brazilian guitarist, singer and percussionist Alegre Correa, but he has also appeared as the tHUNder duo with the equally world-renowned drummer Gábor Dörnyei, with whom he regularly achieved raucous success on international stages. The fully functional coupling of violinist Zoltán Lantos and accordion player Orosz Zoltán is also beyond any notion of trend; it is precisely these unusual sound combinations that bring forth the flow of creative energy to such great effect.
For the March edition of the Jazz Workshop, these duos are arranged to create a fascinating quartet - the instrumentation of which remains unusual - where the four musicians are in continuous dialogue. It is true to say that anything can happen on this evening as the tender dialogues demanding wrapped attention can at any time spiral into virtuoso monologues even as the audience continues to be part of a carefully constructed process.
