“A good song is like a beautiful model. You can give her lots of different clothes to wear as she looks good in anything, even naked,” says András Lovasi, main songwriter of the band Kiscsillag. Proof of this claim will be offered by this acerbic but vivacious rock ’n’ roll band, welcoming fans with a special acoustic set for the occasion. “The real challenge here is whether these songs can hold their own and remain valid in this medium, in this acoustic milieu, and even perhaps whether we – as ...those who “gave birth” to the songs – can discover anything new about them,” says Lovasi. “There are some Kiscsillag songs (Fecskés, Elegáns tűnődés and Nehézbörtönsúlyzó) which were practically written for a concert like this and which needed no adjustment at all; what’s more, this is where they really come alive. There are also some songs (A Pénz miatt, for one) where we’ve only kept the lyrics and the vocal melody, and sometimes not even that – for example, in the case of Állnak a férfiak and Ülnek a kiscsajok. A few songs just take centre stage defenceless, like the naked woman in the film by Jancsó, because the band has stripped them of the armour of instrumentation before they take the stage. We, as parents, simply look on to see how the child performs; we’d take her hand, or then again perhaps not, because, after all, if she can hold here own here then she’ll surely soon be ready to live a life of her own, and we can let her go as she can survive even below the ice. In other words, it is times like these which are perhaps a test of whether we’re writing good songs.” Besides the members of the group, this experimental evening also features the pianist Csaba Vedres and Juli Fábián, one of Hungary’s most recognised jazz talents, as well as the dancer, MC, singer and actress Anna Pásztor. MR2 Acoustic+ from the Palace of Arts is a new series of performances in a concert environment and is co-produced by the public media (MR2-Petőfi Radio, m1) and the Palace of Arts (Müpa). It follows the familiar model of MR2-Petőfi Radio unplugged studio concerts. Recordings for radio and television of outstanding performers from the cream of the Hungarian popular music scene are made in the context of a series of high-quality concerts at the Palace of Arts, providing the audience with not only a concert experience but a look behind the scenes of the recording process. (Each concert in the series will be filmed for broadcast at a later date on the m1 channel in a weekend prime time slot.)
