Jazz Showcase

Now being organised for the twelfth year by Müpa Budapest, the Jazz Showcase is firmly established as one of Central Europe's most important musical talent exchanges. As in previous years, nine young bands will compete to be the jury's, and the audience's, favourite. The performances will represent the broadest possible variety of jazz styles and instrumentation. Winners of the grand prize and audience prize will get a chance to play at Müpa Budapest again in 2019, and special category prizes will also be awarded. This event is presented in association with the Hungarian Jazz Federation, the Zemplén Festival and the Jazz Studies Research Group (Jatakucs).
Mordent Quintet formed as a trio in 2018 with Balázs Raboczki on saxophone, Ambrus Richter on drums and Márk Miskolczi on double bass. Bence Táborszky joined to play trumpet at a later date. By the time of the Jazz Showcase, the musicians will be joined by the pianist Rezső Jónás to complete their final line-up. The group's music strikes a balance between a soloist playing style and harmonic constraints. They strive to add a modern flavour to the sounds of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and McCoy Tyner, while they have also been inspired by musicians such as Marquis Hill, Braxton Cook and Shabaka Hutchings. The result is a unique blend of post-bop, free music and hip-hop.
