Born in Budapest in 1997 into a musical dynasty, János Egri Jr. first displayed his vocal ability at an early age: at age five he was singing popular tunes from Mexico, Spain, America and Hungary. His father, the jazz bassist János Egri, has been a major influence not only as a parent, but also as a musician. János Egri Jr.'s first serious performance was at his father's fortieth birthday, which was celebrated with popular jazz musicians in Hungarian Radio's Marble Hall. Egri has studied the piano since the age of six and has excelled at numerous folk song competitions as both a primary- and music-school student. As a singer, his first major influence was the Mexican performer Alejandro Fernandez, with later influences including Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Barbra Streisand. Jazz plays the central role in his life, and he is always happy to sing the standards. In 2010 he recorded a dual jazz album with his father, and thus the then twelve-year-old child soprano's first record was released through EMI. On the album, titled Voice & Bass, he was accompanied by Árpád Oláh Tzumo on piano and András Mohay on drums.
János Egri Jr. began his high school studies at the Leó Weiner School of Music in 2012. At first he concentrated on piano, but after his voice broke, he changed his focus to singing and jazz. Since September 2013 he has studied under Ágnes Lakatos at the Béla Bartók Conservatory, and naturally is continuing his crucially important piano studies. A performance with his quartet at the 2014 Marosvásárhely (Târgu-Mureș) Student Jazz Festival earned him the honourable mention for best improvisational vocalist.
