At Müpa Budapest, there is no season opening without jazz music - it has been this way since the very beginning. For years, on the occasion of St. Stephen's Day in Hungary, this immensely popular and joyful celebration has attracted jazz fans on the hunt for entertainment. As per tradition, a concert from the Béla Szalóky-led Police Big Band will lead up to the fireworks. After the display, the audience can dance some more to their production, while they will also have the chance to enjoy some jam session-style music from two trios in the Glass Hall and Banner Square, featuring some outstanding special guests. Younger performers are beginning to enjoy an increasingly prominent role in the event: the Glass Hall will host an emerging group who played in the 2018 Jazz Showcase, the Balázs Horváth Trio, while a youthful band with an illustrious name, the Pisti Tóth Jr Trio, will play in Banner Square.
The opening performer on the Open Air Stage will be the 2019 Jazz Showcase Audience Prize-winners, the Panka Szczuka Quartet. They will be followed by a host of legends taking to the stage: Béla Szakcsi Lakatos and Kálmán Oláh-Tony Lakatos Quartet will perform classic songs written by the psychologist S. Pál Gábor in a jazz style. Given that the material from Gábor's To Meet Again album is rarely heard performed live, the event promises to be a truly special occasion.
