Featuring: Zsolt Sárvári Kovács – drums, Ernő Hock – double bass István Grencsó has been one of the leading figures of the Hungarian avant-garde for decades. His career began in 1979 with the Masina band, but achieved wider recognition in the 1980s when he was a member of the Dresch Quartet and a partner of György Szabados. In 1985 he founded the Grencsó Collective, which remains his primary band. He has worked with everything from trios to big bands and made recordings which fuse jazz, ethno music, pop, rock and even ancient Hungarian folk music elements into a unique and individual blend. He has played with Makám and Kampec Dolores, and remains a member of MAKUZ. He is a free musical spirit, independent of trends, fashions and schools, an individualist thinker and not least, with his relationship to his instrument, one of the very finest Hungarian musicians in the realm of jazz music. Perhaps his most lasting works are those where he reinterprets sixties hits, waltzes and chansons. The Grencsó Collective is not so much a band as a loose organisation of musicians.
