“From Mozart to Mystic Dreams”
Béla Szakcsi Lakatos – classical and jazz piano evening
23 February 2007 Friday
6:30 pm - 9 pm
Béla Bartók National Concert Hall
Featuring Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra

interval

Featuring: Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok Conductor: Gábor Hollerung Béla Szakcsi Lakatos dreamed as a child that he would become a famous composer and classical pianist and this dream has proven prophetic. He made his reputation for his brilliant sensitivity for jazz music and his skills as an improviser, but classical music has remained the basis for his formal language – we have only to think of his ballet Cristoforo which was premièred at the Hungarian State Opera House. In the eighties, Szakcsi was being celebrated in America as a star, renowned as soloist of the popular Special EFX band and also as a composer. GRP Records signed him up for a ten record deal. The second recording he released under this contract was his 1989 Mystic Dreams on which the solo piano takes centre stage. In the first half of the concert, we will hear compositions from Szakcsi’s “GRP-era”, with their miraculous atmosphere. The second half features Szakcsi as the soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto in D Major K. 537 “Coronation” with the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok. Szakcsi will be dispensing with written cadenzas and instead, treat us to free improvisations in which turns of phrase, rhythms and harmonies from jazz are bound to crop up.
