Although he only achieved worldwide recognition with the runaway success of the film Buena Vista Social Club, the cowboy-hatted Cuban guitarist and singer Eliades Ochoa has played the characteristic Cuban instrument the tres since he was six years old. Ochoa, who comes from the southeastern part of the island, near Santiago de Cuba, acquired his musical skills on the streets of the town, and with his band he too played in the Cuban son style, just like the other grandees of the Buena Vista Socia...l Club band. Sadly few of these great musicians – who achieved world fame so late in their lives – are still among us; so as one of the last surviving representatives of the legendary musical group, Ochoa is the focus of even greater attention. Besides playing in the son style, the guitarist also gives voice to the sounds of rural Cuba, often playing in the guajira or guaracha styles. And the musician, often referred as the “Cuban Johnny Cash”, has also received a Grammy award. He has played concerts in forty countries, and performed together with numerous famous musicians. Besides his music, his personality is also a factor in the success of his concerts, which are known for their congenial and informal atmosphere.
