Mihály Dresch – saxophone, recorder, Miklós Lukács – cimbalom, Mátyás Szandai – double bass, István Baló – drums Guest: Márton Bakai – violin Mihály Dresch in common with many of the world’s great musicians does not decide in advance precisely what and how he will play on stage. He only decides at any given moment of the concert. According to many, this distinguished saxophonist and woodwind player is one of the most direct successors to the folk music attitude of Bartók in the 21st century, but there is far more to his style than that. The music of the “pure source” of the Carpathian Basin progresses hand in hand with the musical dialect of Afro-America, primarily with swing, bop and in its mood, blues. In Mihály Dresch’s music, the Hungarian folk music instruments find themselves in a unique but homely environment: he is happy to play the shepherd’s pipe, but his band can also accommodate cimbalom and fiddle. This evening, a young artist will be making his debut on the latter instrument. Márton Bakai was born in Esztergom in 1984 and graduated from the Béni Egressy Conservatoire in 2006, before continuing his studies at the ELTE University Music Faculty. His early career was spent with various world and folk music groups, either as a founder or collaborator. The fundamentals of Dresch’s music are also shaped by a characteristic strong rhythm section. Under Dresch’s guidance when played by superb musicians, these instruments give voice to deep and hidden human emotions and feelings on a very high artistic plane, which can be a truly cathartic experience for the listener.
