"I've come to know DánielSzabó as an exceptional and compelling talent - both as a pianist and a composer”, says Peter Erskine, one of the most outstanding and enthralling drummers and composers on the jazz scene today. Luck and a lot of hard work was needed for Erskine to be able to make such a claim for this young pianist, who moved to Los Angeles from Hungary in 2012, and who met Erskine while taking part in a doctoral course at the University of Southern California, where the jazz lege...nd works as a professor, and where they also hooked up with bassist Edwin Livingston. In truth, it is no great surprise to hear Dani in the company of such great musicians, given the earlier career boost he received from Danilo Pérez and Bob Brookmeyer as a student at the New England Conservatory in Boston, as well as cutting joint albums with Kurt Rosenwinkel (Frictions, 2007) and Chris Potter (Contributions, 2010).
After another gap of three years, Szabó now resurfaces with a new album featuring Erskine and Livingston, entitled A Song From There. Both illustrious members of the rhythm section picked up an instant feel for the character of the compositions by Szabó, performing them for the first time live at the Blue Whale club in March 2013 with such ease that it seemed as if they had always played together. They went on to record the material for the album in a Los Angeles studio in May. The Festival Theatre audience now has the chance to enjoy the European première of material from this record in what we might call a special edition of the Jazz Workshop series, and to join their musical compatriot in experiencing what is perhaps the greatest success of his career so far.
