The Csík Band was founded twenty-four years ago in Kecskemét. For over ten years the band played traditional Hungarian peasant music only from the purest sources. At first they were mainly known within the traditional folk music community of the Dance House; however, by the turn of the millennium their popularity as a concert band had increased to the point where they were one of the representatives of Hungarian folk music at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. This perio...d spelt the start of a new journey. On the title track of their 2001 album A kor falára, a melody from Magyarpalatka was transformed into swing as an experiment to see how an age-old Hungarian tune would fare in the “new world.” Their 2005 album Senki nem ért semmit saw them take a step further. Alongside music from historic Upper Hungary, Békés and Transylvania, they played three tracks by Hungarian alternative rock band Kispál és a Borz and an American blues with lyrics and vocals by András Lovasi – with great success. The renditions fitted in smoothly with Hungarian folk music, as with the band’s overall sound. A new connection was born in the relationship between Hungarian folk and rock music, the so-called “traditional rock-ethno” in which “folk music engulfed rock music.” This new style was developed even further in 2008, when a song entitled Most múlik pontosan, a cover of a Quimby original from the Csík Band’s album Ez a vonat, ha elindult, hadd menjen…, evolved into an anthem with over four million clicks on YouTube, bringing the band as yet unheard-of popularity in folk band circles. This was followed by the CD/DVD SzívestÖRÖMest, which captured the sound and visuals of the band’s 2009 New Year concert, featuring Gábor Presser, Tibor Kiss and the Dresch Quartet. At their 2011 concert in the Palace of Arts, in collaboration with the Vivace Chamber Orchestra, the band gave a highly successful performance of a suite by Miklós Lukács in which classical music embraces folk. At this evening’s concert, apart from the “compulsory” songs expected of the band, new tunes will be heard from the brand new Csík record. But we can also be sure that the Csík Band and Friends will once again have a few surprises up their sleeves. Presented by: Fonó Buda House of Music
