For decades, Chick Corea, one of the geniuses of contemporary jazz, has brought each of his musical projects representing a turning point in his career to the Hungarian audience. In recent years, he has appeared here with smaller ensembles, and we have also got to hear him as a piano soloist and in a duo with Gary Burton. The time has now come for him to appear in his actively touring sextet, The Vigil, performing material from the album of the same name released to enthusiastic reviews in 2013 and containing many new compositions. Corea has recruited an international team of brilliant talents. On drums, Marcus Gilmore (Roy Haynes' grandson) provides a sure beat for the group, alongside the Cuban bass phenomenon Carlitos Del Puerto. Venezuela's Luisito Quintero has played percussion for many of the greats in music, from the Rolling Stones to Paul Simon, and from Diana Krall to George Benson. The playing of British saxophonist Tim Garland, who was already invited to perform in Corea's earlier group Origin in 2000, has been described by Corea as indicative of a rare level of genius. Guitarist Charles Altura is one of the youngest talents on the scene and has appeared previously alongside Stanley Clarke.
The Vigil sometimes recalls the jazz-rock sounds typical of the Return to Forever period, while at other times - naturally enough - employing Latin or North African motifs, all put together with a masterful touch in every note. Corea continues to take meticulous care in delivering sublimely virtuosic performances offering both innovative power and a colourful musical experience.
