Buika
29 February 2016 Monday
7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Béla Bartók National Concert Hall

Buika was born in Spain as the daughter of African parents, but she currently lives in Florida. It is no coincidence that this singer, drummer, poet and composer is often compared to Nina Simone, Cesaria Evora, Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf and Amy Winehouse, even though she always wanted to be a drummer. It's just that nobody wanted a female drummer in their band, and it was so hard being rejected all the time...
No matter how it worked out, the main thing is that Buika is now one of the most sought-after singers of our time, and one who feels equally at home with flamenco, African polyrhythm, jazz, soul and pop. She came out with her début album, Mestizuo, in 2000, and there has been no stopping her since: Vivir Sin Miedo, her eighth album, was released in the autumn of 2015. Her greatest success came with her 2013 disc La Noche Mas Larga, which earned her a Grammy nomination for best Latin album. Along the course of her career as a performer, she has collaborated with such luminaries as Me’shell Ndegocello, Anoushka Shankar, Chick Corea, Chucho Valdes, Mariza, Pat Metheny, Seal and Javier Limón. And all the while she has been publishing volumes of poetry and writing a novel and an opera, even as she continues to win hearts with her concerts in countries all over the world. Now at the peak of her success, she has finally made it to Hungary.
