For the tenth occasion, the Palace of Arts invites fans of traditional jazz for its now customary three-day festival, where noted Hungarian and international purveyors of styles from the cradle of jazz in New Orleans to swing entertain those yearning for a quality jazz experience. And seeing as we're celebrating a jubilee, Hungary's favourite jazz groups will follow hot on each other's heels on the last weekend of August, each bringing their own unique show and very special guests to the s...tage.
To begin with, we welcome the Benkó Dixieland Band, which has arrived at a very important anniversary for those who believe in the power of numbers. Formed in 1957, one of the most popular traditional jazz ensembles in Hungary is 57 years old this year. Although Benkó and his band have performed in the building more than ten times since Müpa's foundation, on this occasion they appear with a show we have never heard before. Many people regard it as self-evident that jazz originated in America, but might be surprised to hear that it was also heard in Europe at the turn of the 20th century. The BDB therefore invites us to discover the jazz treasures of the old continent, from its beginnings to the development of the manouche jazz style hallmarked by the name of Django Reinhardt.
Alongside his six regular band mates, bandleader Sándor Benkó will call on the assistance of two indispensable performers on the local jazz scene in performing this carefully compiled programme: 75-year-old violinist Csaba Deseő, winner of the Artisjus and Gábor Szabó prizes, holder of the knight's cross of the Order of Hungary, and one of everyone's favourite musicians, the endlessly energetic guitarist István Gyárfás.
