The songbook of fate has largely assigned Portugal's national musical tradition of fado to female singers - from Maria Severa to Amália Rodrigues to Mariza today - but this does not mean male voices have not had a role to play. Men have particularly excelled on the frontline of fado fusion, as José Afonso did in the 1970s with his affinity for Latin American folk music, or as António Zambujo, one of the leading figures of contemporary fado, does today. Born in 1975, the singer and guitarist has a perfect understanding of the idiom and rules of the genre, so that the mood of "eternal longing” typical of fado is also discernible in his songs. It was not by accident that he won the title of "best male fado singer” from the Amália Rodrigues Foundation.
At the same time, Zambujo's ties to this visceral tradition allow him room to include the influences of the southern Portuguese Cante Alentejano tradition, as well as Brazilian bossa nova and jazz. He is also original in his instrumentation, combining the indispensable Portuguese guitar with clarinet and the ukulele-like cavaquinho. It is with this musical combination that he has attained outstanding success: his 2012 album Quinto was immovable from the Top 30 hit list in Portugal for a solid two years, becoming a platinum disc despite its intimate tone. His seventh album, released under the title Rua Da Emenda, has already attracted the international attention accorded fado's brightest stars.
