The Celebration of Folk Music is about far more than just the gala night. Starting in the afternoon Müpa Budapest will welcome lovers of folk music and dance with free family programmes. Hungarian folk music is nearly inseparable from “dance house”, at least since the movement began in 1973. That was the year when the first dance house was held where the Writers' Bookshop now stands, publicised as a “dance house, just like in the Szék region of Transylvania” And what is dance house around Szék like? Well, this is something everybody can find out in the Atrium – first between 6 pm and 7 pm, and later between 10 pm and 11 pm – in the dance house held by the Attila Mihó Band, a young ensemble appreciated by the celebrated Sebő Band with the words, “They play the music of Szék the way we always wanted to play it.”
