The 2024 iteration of A Celebration of Folk Music, held at Müpa Budapest each year since 2008, places the spotlight on Márta Sebestyén as she celebrates the 50th anniversary of her career debut, and taking the stage with the singer will be the children of her colleagues, representing the most recent of the many generations that have sustained Hungary’s dance hall movement. The extensive roster of guest artists brings to the stage the Erdőfű Band, Söndörgő and the Béla Szerényi and Sons Hurdy-Gurdy Band, along with the Magyarpalatkai Band and, visiting from Ireland, Andy Irvine and Dónal Lunny. Prior to the start of this truly diverse programme, Erdőfű, one of the participating ensembles, will warm up the audience with an hour-and-a-half dance house session in the Atrium.

As a prelude to the ‘My heart plays...’ concert structured around the artistic output of Márta Sebestyén, the audience can look forward to a dance house in the Müpa Budapest Atrium from 5.30 pm to 7 pm. There to ensure that even those who have never ventured out to such an event can gain some familiarity with the basic steps will be dancers Zoltán Zsuráfszky Jr and Judit Zsuráfszky Szabó. And providing the music will be one of the big guns of the genre, the dance musicians of Erdőfű. The band’s members have all dedicated themselves to authentically performing the folk music tradition of the Carpathian Basin both at dance houses and in concert. The ensemble’s aim is to provide a comprehensive picture of the diversity of the string folk music of both Hungarian-inhabited areas and the ethnic groups living together with us, bearing in mind the unique characteristics of the various regions and villages. The ars poetica of this musical association demands both profound expert knowledge and a specific understanding of the instruments employed in the musical traditions of the different areas.
