“Liszt is not an artist whose memory slowly but surely fades like the sounds of music, he is a phenomenon. The most famous Hungarian of his time, Liszt saw his music as a spear tossed into the future that would only find its audience a generation later. Yet today’s listeners will find themselves drifting through the past as they immerse themselves in his music. All the same, Liszt did live in the future in certain respects. He knew the meaning of PR, and he knew that charity was not just a gesture, but an investment. He also knew the vital importance of differentiation – it only takes two chords to recognise Liszt’s work. If we see a man with long, straight, white hair, we say even today: He has Liszt hair. But it is easy to forget that Liszt did all this with a purpose in mind – he wanted us to hear his music, observe the example he sets, and choose to follow or reject it. Let us not remember this. We are the future. We just need to let that spear find its target.” Miklós Fáy Organizer: The Palace of Arts
