SOUNDWEAVING
Middle East Edition
13 October 2016, Thursday

Banner Square
Produced by Müpa Budapest

Soundweaving, or, music on a loom. Hybridart Management introduced the project called Soundweaving - Middle East Edition at the end of last year, at the Dubai Design Week. In February 2016, it was presented at the Etihad Modern Art Gallery of Abu Dhabi, apropos of the Hungarian Weeks organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Dubai office of the Hungarian National Trading House.
The joint work of Zsanett Szirmay (MOME, Textile Programme) and composer Dániel Vikukel, the project turns the traditional cross-stitch patterns of Hungarian folk embroidery into sound with the use of a punch-card musical box. The cross-stitch pattern was punched in the music-box tapes by the composer himself. The tape now functions as the score. The patterns are based on folk embroidery on cushions and shirts, from Bukovina, Tara Călatei (Kalotaszeg), and Hungary. The embroideries were transformed into laser-cut textiles, the cross-stitch patterns into a melody.
The first version of Soundweaving, which uses Hungarian motifs, made its debut in the autumn of 2014, at the Vienna Design Week, where Hungary was the guest of honour. Later it was shown at the Heimtextil fair in Frankfurt, and at the Balassi Institute in Stuttgart.

The exhibition is on view between 13 and 23 October.

An event jointly organized with Art Moments and Hybrid Art.
