Every culture has its stories about birds. Where did they come from, why can they fly, what do they sing about, and will we ever understand them? Marica Production’s latest work, 100 Golden Birds, constructs an elaborate puppet world around these very questions. Laura Somos has woven together tales collected from all corners of the globe, while the live performance of Lilla László’s music brings the birdsong to life. Puppets play a central role throughout: from tiny eggs hatch unexpected shapes and playful transformations to create a whole flock of birds on stage. The two puppeteers lead the audience from one story to the next with humour and creativity, while figments of the imagination and a knowledge of nature intertwine ever so subtly. And, of course, the eternal question eventually arises: which came first, the chicken or the egg?
