Bear and Bird are the best of friends: they picnic together, eat cake, go hiking, and, when they have nothing better to do, watch the clouds. What makes Jarvis’s popular stories so lovable is that they present friendship as fallible: their heroes experience envy and hurt feelings, but also reconciliation. The full spectrum of emotions is depicted with humour and irony. This production by the Illaberek Puppet Theatre speaks, through the minor conflicts between two endearing characters, of trust, attentiveness, and how we can be there for one another even when we disagree. Károly Szívós’s direction is light and precise, while Benedek Darvas’s music adds even more colour to this cheerful world. A puppet performance in which children will recognise themselves in certain situations, while adults may realise that a good friendship does not have to be free of conflict.
The performance is part of the Jurányi House and Pagony Publishing programme series entitled Icing on the Cake in collaboration with the Illaberek Puppet Theatre.
