The world is turned upside down when carnival comes around: girls wear hats, goats dance, masqueraders roam the villages, and laughter is as essential to the feast as doughnuts and music. The BaHorKa Company’s production conjures up this playful cavalcade of folk customs through song, dance and live music. Carnival greetings, the teasing of married women, wedding songs, fortune-tellers, the lament of old maids, and the burial of the carnival come thick and fast, while children become acquainted with the colourful figures and humorous customs of an age-old festive season. The lively accompaniment of wind instruments, the accordion, and the viola will create a genuine community atmosphere, and this cheerful, lively, and colourful performance will demonstrate the liberating power mid-winter revelry once possessed – and why it is worth preserving something of it even today.
