Dániel Csengery: Frau Holle
19 November 2023, Sunday
2 pm - 3:15 pm
Festival Theatre
Produced by Müpa Budapest
Opera Matinée

In the 2020 Müpa Budapest Music Competition, Frau Holle (Holle anyó) won first prize in the children's opera category. Its composer, Dániel Csengery, has written music for several plays and films, including Liza, the Fox-Fairy. Many of these works are written directly for young audiences.

The music for the opera - adapted from the well-known fairytale - closely resembles the character of its young hero, Aliz, who is unafraid of risk, and bravely leaps into the unknown with the aim of doing good. The music is colourful, inventively arranged, energetic, melodic and thrillingly harmonised. Exactly the type of music the ever curious heart and ears of children are receptive to. The new opera doesn't just seek to narrate its exciting story, but also to introduce younger audiences to the genre of opera, with its characteristic elements and complex relationship with theatre and music. In the most noble meaning of the word: an initiation. Directed by János Szemenyei, a versatile talent of musical theatre, and replete with great roles, Frau Holle features a cast of excellent artists, so there is plenty to keep new and old lovers of the genre immersed in the universe of this fresh play.

Children's opera in one act, in Hungarian.

Due to the excessive use of lights and sound effects, we do not recommend this performance to those with epilepsy and other conditions with similar sensitivity issues.

A prize-winning work of the 2020 Müpa Budapest Music Competition.

The premiere was an event of the Bartók Spring 2023.
